Contemplating No Bouquet Option

Some of you may have seen the recent episode of Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids that featured the bride who wanted her bridesmaids to carry muffs. Although I am not a fan of muffs (I hate the winter), I think it’s a clever idea to carry something out of the ordinary. I’ve also seen suggestions on The Knot community boards to carry a Bible instead.

After The Perfect Palette posted an entire Facebook album of some seriously GORGEOUS bouquets today, I began to wonder where the tradition of carrying flowers started.

From a Google search, I gathered that this started wayyyyyyy back when bathing was not part of a woman’s daily (or even monthly) routine. She would carry flowers the day of her wedding to mask her odor and not offend her guests.  And from there the tradition stuck.

I love flowers, don’t get me wrong. I love looking at the pictures of flowers in other weddings. I even mocked up what my ideal bouquet would look like within 36 hours of being engaged (I know, bridal psycho in the making, I was excited!! Plus the first color scheme I came up with got a lot of eye brow raises and putting together the bouquet was the easiest way to show my mom and aunts what in the world I was envisioning). But as I have gotten further into planning and talking with vendors, I’m thinking it may not be the wisest investment of our limited financial resources for this whole shindig.

I have full confidence in my bouquet building abilities, but just the cost of the flowers themselves seem outrageous. Earlier in the prickly planning process I tried to convince my mother a good mother-daughter project would be to grow the flowers ourselves. She then pointed out it isn’t much of a mother-daughter project if I am three states away (It’s more like 2 1/2 states, but I get her point).

I have looked into other options like craft store or crepe paper flowers, but I am not a fan of the way they look. AHHHH, why is everything wedding related so freaking expensive?!?!!?!?!?!?! (Sorry for that, just needed to get that off my chest).

I am very much a believer in the “go big or go home” mentality so you know if I have flowers in my bouquet, it will be the most rockingest, best smelling, phenomenal melting pot of colors you have ever seen. Or I may not have a bouquet at all and do a Ricky Bobby all the way down the aisle because I do not know what to do with my hands.

Did you opt for something other than the traditional floral bouquet? How did you keep costs low for your flower budget? Share them here!!!

Dress shopping: Omaha Edition

I will be embarking on my second dress shopping excursion in approximately 47 minutes and 39 seconds. I am taking the plunge and heading to David’s Bridal (against my better judgement and recommendations on The Knot boards) but only because I am label addict and want to try on the White by Vera Wang line.

In all honesty, these “shopping trips” are more “looking trips.” I am trying to get a feel for the fabrics, colors, necklines, silhouettes, and embellishments I like, because the fabulous Faith Annette (my bff since 6th grade, recent SCAD graduate and showcasing at NY Fashion week in September. See her work here and here starting at 2:30 – the pink tights were not her idea) will be making my gown. BUT these consultants don’t need to know that yet! Continue reading
